How to Run the Perfect Quiz Night

A well-organized quiz night can turn a simple dinner into an unforgettable experience. Here is a complete guide to creating the perfect quiz.

1. Choose the Right Theme

The theme is the foundation of every successful quiz. It can be:

  • A specific topic (80s music, classic cinema, world geography)
  • A special event or anniversary
  • A mix of different categories
  • A surprise theme revealed at the start

2. Length, and the Timer That Sets It

Between 15 and 25 questions is the range that works. Fewer than 15 is over before the room has warmed up; past 25 you can watch attention drain out of the table.

The number that actually decides how long you are there is the per-question timer. Quiz8 accepts anything from 5 to 60 seconds and starts at 20. Multiply: 20 questions at 20 seconds is under seven minutes of answering, and roughly twice that once you add reading each question aloud and the noise between them.

Shorter is usually better than you think. Ten seconds turns a general-knowledge question into a reflex test, which is loud and funny; forty gives a table time to argue, which is a different and slower kind of good. Pick the one you want and set it deliberately — the default is a compromise, not a recommendation.

The Quiz8 setup controls: a questions counter set to 4, a time-per-question dial labelled 5 to 60 seconds set to 20, a three-level difficulty selector, and the 50/50, plus-five-seconds and double-points power-ups.
Both dials live on the same row when you set the game up, so length is one decision rather than two.

3. Where the Score Swings

A quiz where the leader is decided by question six is a quiz half the room stops playing. Two moments in a Quiz8 game exist to stop that happening, and you do not have to set either of them up:

  • The midpoint question — worth double if you get it, and it takes 30 points off you if you do not. It cannot drop you below zero, so it is a gamble with a floor.
  • The final question — worth double for everyone. Anyone within striking distance is still in it on the last read, which is the whole point.

A streak matters too: three correct answers in a row and everything after is worth 30% more until you miss. That is what turns a quiet player who knows one category into a genuine threat.

What is left to you is the ordering. Open with something almost everyone gets — a room that scores on question one plays differently from a room that does not — and put your hardest question just before the midpoint, so the gamble arrives while the table is already unsure of itself.

4. How Many People Can Play

Every Quiz8 room seats 42 players, free or Pro. Nobody needs an account and nobody installs anything — players open a link, type a name, and they are in.

For a dinner table or a classroom, 20 is not a limit you will notice. For a wedding or a company event it is, and the honest advice is to check the headcount before the night rather than in front of everyone. If you are over it, one person can play on behalf of a table — teams of three or four sharing a phone is a better party format than forty individual scores anyway.

5. Prepare the Prizes

Prizes do not need to be expensive. Some simple ideas:

  • A homemade crown for the winner
  • A drink voucher or small gift
  • A special title (“Champion of the Night”)
  • A group photo with the winner

6. Test the Quiz Beforehand

Before the event, run a quick test with 2–3 people to:

  • Check that questions are clearly worded
  • Adjust the difficulty level
  • Test the platform and connection
  • Estimate the total playing time

The one worth doing properly is the connection. A quiz night dies the moment the host has to say “hang on” twice. Load the game on the screen you will actually use, in the room you will actually be in, on that room's wifi — a laptop that works in the kitchen and not in the garden is a problem you want to find the day before.
